Dr. APJ Kalam, known as the Missile man of India for his contributions to ISRO (Indian Scientific Research Organization), was also one of the favourite presidents of Indian kids. Just like Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Kalam adored kids and inspired in them a streak to achieve excellence. He spent a lot of his presidential tenure (2002-07) visiting educational institutions and interacting with the youth of India. Thus, it is appropriate that on Children's Day we remember his inspirational words of wisdom that he addressed to the students.
"When I took over as president, I studied the Constitution, and the more I studied it, the more I realised that it does not prevent the president of India from giving the nation a vision. So when I went and presented this vision in Parliament and in legislative assemblies; everyone welcomed it, irrespective of party affiliations," APJ Abdul Kalam said in an interview. The humble president, adorned with Bharat Ratna, was a great scientist and an inspiring leader. He gained popularity for motivating children for scientific pursuits, thus becoming a role model and also earning the title 'People's President.’ His life epitomized simple living and grand thinking. He wrote the book ‘India 2020’ to show the youth a vision of developed India by 2020. - Daily Bhaskar.com In his Children's Day interaction with school children in 2005, he told the young children who had assembled from different parts of the country, that apart from excelling in studies, they should also strive to become good human beings. He reiterated the same sentiment in his interaction with children next year, i.e. on November 14, 2006 too. In his interaction he emphasized on the need to acquire knowledge to advance career. He also told the assembled children that they should contribute to the development of nation by using their spare time on Saturdays and Sundays to teach people in rural areas who cannot read or write. Similarly, the children should utilize their spare time to plant saplings in their School campus as well as in their surroundings. - NDTV.com ![]()
